The department comprises 17 full-time specialist teachers and 1 full-time support staff housed in their own specialist teaching rooms one of which is an IT suite where pupils have access to a range of relevant programmes.

The department teaches all pupils in KS3 and KS4 where the AQA examination syllabus specification A is followed for both GCSE English and Literature. At GCE Advanced Level the AQA combined syllabus and the AQA English literature syllabus are both offered as is the GCSE mature syllabus.

Department Aims:

The department has at its heart the belief that all pupils are entitled and encouraged to maximise their potential both in and through this subject. We believe that every pupil should be helped to discover and develop a love of language and of the written word that will stay with them throughout their lives.

The study of how others perceive the world and their place in it is fundamental to the study of literature and in this way the work of the department staff is as much about developing notions of citizenship and understanding in pupils as it is the mechanical study of language and its variety of forms.
