The PCE department was rebranded from Religious Education in 2009 as we felt it better represented our curriculum aims and delivery. We follow the guidance set out in the National Curriculum (RE, although we do refer to the citizenship National Curriculum) and the Birmingham agreed syllabus. However we feel that the new name encompasses our vision of a curriculum that not only incorporates but embraces the interconnectedness of a variety of moral, social and philosophical issues whilst developing pupil’s critical skills.
Our team comprises of 4 full time specialist teachers as well as an AST and members of the SLG, we are also supported by a full time member of the learning support team.
We strive to be innovative with our use of IT and have access to laptops and PSPs to be used within lessons.
We teach all pupils across KS3 and KS4, with pupils being given the opportunity to ‘opt’ for the subject at GCSE or Advanced Level. We currently teach the OCR Religious Studies (Philosophy and Ethics) at GCSE and AQA Religious Studies (Philosophy and Ethics) at A Level.
As a department we strive to be stimulating and engaging allowing and motivating pupils to participate actively through well planned and varied lessons.
We aim to create awareness, celebration and tolerance of diversity –different cultures, beliefs and traditions. Hopefully allowing pupils to draw comparisons between and reflect upon the beliefs and practices of themselves and others.
We hope that through the development of skills and the facilitation of forums (e.g through debate and discussion) pupils will be able to analyse, evaluate and make reasoned judgements about a variety of topics and issues.
We try to develop pupils that are active citizens, who are not only aware of local and global issues, but can discuss and relate to issues that affect both them and others in wider national/international communities.
