Department Description

The Design and Technology department is a vibrant part of the school curriculum whereby pupils are given the opportunity to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills within a broad curriculum. We cover the following areas at Key Stage 3:

Food Technology.

Textiles Technology.

Systems and Control .

Resistant Materials.

At KS4 our design and technology diet comprises of the following areas:

BTEC Construction (2 GCSE equivalent) New from September 2009.

BTEC Engineering (2 GCSE equivalent) New from September 2009.

GCSE Graphic Products.

GCSE Resistant Materials.

GCSE Textiles Technology.

Food Technology.

Catering

All areas at Key Stage 4 are taught by specialist teachers at Key Stage3 staff occasionally teach across the specialism to develop their knowledge and skills base.

The department is one that believes pupils should be allowed to be creative and expressive in their designing and making. We also believe that as a department that we should prepare youngsters for a world that is changing technologically every day. Pupils are encouraged to collaborate and discuss their ideas as well be effective team players creating products that are functional and marketable.

The department comprises of 13 teaching staff and 3 technicians. There is an AST within the department who provides support and guidance to the team in delivering lessons that are creative and allow pupils to develop their level of thinking. SEN support is also a strong aspect of the curriculum area.

Department Aims

For Pupils to gain an awareness and understanding of the need to design and to develop their ability to design creatively.

To encourage pupils to become both skillful and accurate in their making and to produce qualiy products.

To encourage pupils to develop enquiring minds and to develop pupils ability to research widely and purposefully. Also to encourage pupils to question, analyse and form opinions about various aspects of their work.

To develop pupils ability to organise their time and resources in order to achieve their desired result before a set deadline.

To work safely with a wide variety of materials.

To stimulate and sustain pupils enthusiasm and enjoyment of the subject.

To incorporate the use of I.T within Technology projects as far as possible.

For pupils to understand the purpose of and necessity for Design Technology in their school and future lives.

To maximise the achievement of every pupil and promote equal opportunities for all pupils.

To prepare pupils for an ever changing society technologically.

To develop problem solving capabilities within pupils.

To be creative thinkers and effectively participate within lessons through design and make activities.

To develop team work skills.
